FSRS and review timing

Updated:

FSRS (Free Spaced Repetition Scheduler) calculates when you should next review a word based on your answer history. It is used for regular reviews in this app.

Your answers determine the next review

When you answer a card, the result is saved and its next review date is calculated. Words you remember tend to be scheduled further apart, while less certain words tend to return sooner.

Desired retention and review workload

Desired retention sets how likely you aim to be to remember a card at review time. A higher value generally shortens intervals and increases the number of reviews. A lower value reduces the workload but may mean forgetting more words.

You can choose a value from 1% to 99% under “Study settings” in “Settings & guide”. The default is 90%.

Practice leaves the review schedule unchanged

Random review, Review all words, Review recent material, and Review incorrect answers are practice. Answering in these sessions does not change the FSRS schedule, including the next review date.

Each direction has its own schedule

Front → back and back → front have separate next review dates. Answering in one direction does not affect the other direction’s schedule. The daily new card limit also allows the same number of new cards in each direction.

Start with the defaults, then adjust

You can use the app without understanding the algorithm’s calculations. The main settings you can adjust are the daily new card limit and desired retention. Start with the defaults, then adjust them if the review workload feels too high or too low.
