Getting started

Updated:

Flashcards helps you learn words and terms by reviewing them repeatedly as cards. This guide walks you through your first steps.

Create a deck

Select “Create deck” on the home screen and give your collection of study material a name. You can also create folders to organize your decks.

Add cards

Open a deck, enter the front (question) and back (answer), then select “Add card”. Hints and photos are optional.

Large photos are automatically resized when added so that their longest side is 1280 pixels. This reduces the amount of data stored on your device.

To add many words at once, you can import a CSV file. See “Create flashcards with CSV and AI” for details.

Choose an answer mode

On the deck screen, choose Self rating, Typed answer, or Multiple choice. See “Answer modes and review sets” for the differences.

Complete your first review

  1. Choose an answer mode on the deck screen.
  2. Select “Start review”.
  3. On the “Choose a review” screen, select “Start today’s review”. You can also choose a different review set.
  4. Look at each card and try to recall the answer before checking it.
  5. When you finish, you will see the accuracy for this session and the number of cards scheduled for review by tomorrow.
  6. If you answered any words incorrectly, select “Review incorrect answers” to practice just those words again.

When no words are due today, a message saying that no words are scheduled for review today appears instead of “Start today’s review”. You can still choose practice options such as “Review all words”. See “Answer modes and review sets” for details.

Back up your data

Your data is stored in the browser on your device and does not sync automatically. Open “Backup management” under “Data management” in “Settings & guide” and select “Export as JSON” to save a backup. You can use “Restore from JSON” if your device fails or you switch devices. Regular backups are recommended.

You can check when you last exported a backup under “Last backup” in “Data management”.

Importing a backup with “Restore from JSON” replaces all current data. The confirmation screen shows when the backup was created and the deck names it contains. When you continue, the app first exports your current data as a safety copy: a JSON file with a name starting with vocab-backup-before-restore-. Your browser may ask you to save it. Save the file, check that it was saved successfully, then select “Import” to begin importing. If the safety copy was not saved, select “Export safety copy again”. To stop without importing, select “Cancel”. If you restore the wrong backup, you can import this safety copy with “Restore from JSON” to return to the state before the restore.
